BIROW V Workshop
When: January 17 -19, 2008
Where: Bethesda North Convention Center,
Bethesda, MD
Publication: White Paper June 2008
A workshop to identify and explore new opportunities for basic science research and engineering development in biomedical imaging, as well as related diagnosis and therapy. The workshop will provide information and ideas for new investigators, support accelerated development of biomedical imaging as a scientific discipline, and facilitate coordinated imaging research.
Main Topic: IMAGING AND CHARACTERIZING STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION IN NATIVE AND ENGINEERED TISSUE
Speakers have been invited to present on 4 selected topics, in focused breakout groups, and discussion with invited government representatives:
- Heterogeneous Single Cell Measurements and Their Integration into Tissue and Organism Models
Moderators: Robert Murphy, PhD and Warren Grundfest, MD/PhD - Functional Molecular and Structural Imaging of Engineered Tissue in vitro and in vivo.
Moderators: Anne Meyer, PhD and Christine Kelley, Ph.D. - New Technologies for Characterizing Cells and Tissues in situ
Moderators: Kevin Cleary, PhD, and Richard Ehman, MD - Imaging for Targeted Cell, Gene and Drug Delivery
Moderators: Vladimir Torchlin, PhD and William Phillips, MD
Partial financial support for BIROW V has been received through a grant from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.
The purpose of BIROW V, from the NIBIB perspective, will be a collaborative meeting between bioengineers and imaging scientists to facilitate a cross-fertilization of ideas and interdisciplinary science.
Areas of interest where NIBIB could use input from BIROW V include: Unmet needs in bioinformatics (e.g., data integration, open-source, data format standards and algorithm assessment, image analysis tools, etc.). In-vivo optical imaging: emerging technologies and applications eliminating health disparities.
